Rhode Island officials said that three people, including the suspected gunman, are dead, and three others were injured in a shooting during a high school hockey game at a Pawtucket arena on Monday afternoon.

Police said the shooting appears to have happened after a family dispute. Two members of the shooting suspect’s family and a friend were killed before the shooter fatally shot himself, Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said.

“A good Samaritan stepped in and interjected in the scene, and that’s probably what led to a swift end of this tragic event,” Goncalves said at a news conference. She did not identify the person.

According to Goncalves, the shooting suspect has been identified as born Robert Dorgan, who police learned also used the name Roberta Esposito.

Boston TV station WCVB NewsCenter 5 interviewed a woman leaving the police station after the shooting who said that her father was the shooter.

“He shot my family, and he’s dead now,” she told the reporter. “He has mental health issues.”

Police have not identified the people who were killed and injured.

The shooting took place at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena when some players were on the ice and spectators were in the stands. Players were seen diving to the ground and escaping to the locker room during the shooting.

Players and others who were at the arena were taken by bus to the police station for statements. Some players told local news stations they heard at least 12 shots being fired.

Police said they recovered more than one weapon at the scene.
