Severe storms in Kansas caused $879 million in insurance claims in 2025, the state insurance department said.

More than 82,000 total storm claims reported in 2025. The claim amounts was a 99% increase from 2023, which totaled 147,710 claims and paid out $442 million.

“These numbers serve as a reminder that severe storms happen right here in Kansas, and the damage is costly.” said Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. “Review your policy and check in with your insurance agent to make sure you are ready for this storm season.”

Sedgwick County, home to Wichita, accounted for more than one-third of all paid claims at $383 million. A destructive hailstorm struck Wichita in early September, with reports indicating hail up to 2.75 inches (baseball size).

Home improvement experts told television station KWCH that anywhere from 100,000 to 140,000 homes were damaged during the storm.

Saline County had the second-highest amount of paid claims at $23 million, followed by Riley County at $22.5 million.

A full county-by-county of the data can be found here.
