Air traffic controller staffing at LaGuardia airport on the night an Air Canada jet collided with a fire truck may have violated the facility’s procedures by combining roles before midnight, according to a document seen by Reuters. The crash at the New York airport at about 11:37 p.m. ET on March 22, which killed both pilots, has revived concerns over U.S. air traffic control staffing shortages and the workload of controllers across the country. Staffing shortages, including at the supervisor level, are placing controllers into combined roles handling local air and ground traffic more often, according to several air traffic…

But Texas doesn’t have enough electricians to meet the demands of two competing priorities: building the housing to meet the needs of a growing state and becoming a global leader in AI. The…

IntroductionWhy Measure Health Disparities?Disparities in health and health care between racial and ethnic groups do not exist in the abstract. In every U.S. state, differences in access to care, quality of care, or outcomes of care affect people’s health and well-being: whether they can afford to see a doctor or fill a prescription; whether a preventable or treatable condition like hypertension or diabetes is diagnosed and treated early; whether an illness undermines a family’s financial stability; or whether people trust the health care system enough to seek care when they need it.By measuring and reporting on health disparities, we help…

Purdue Pharma appeared in New Jersey federal court on Tuesday for sentencing on charges of deceiving government regulators and paying kickbacks to doctors to boost opioid sales. The sentencing will complete a plea deal that clears the way for the company to dissolve in bankruptcy and use its assets to fund a $7.4 billion settlement intended to compensate people harmed by the opioid epidemic. U.S. District Judge Madeline Cox Arleo in Newark, New Jersey, said she was inclined to accept the plea deal but first wanted to hear from victims of the opioid crisis. Several victims sent letters to the…

New research studies from the American Medical Association (AMA) reveal many physicians face a significant risk of being sued during their careers. The ever-present risk of lawsuits—even when no error occurred—and high medical liability insurance premiums have contributed to a prolonged period of heavy financial burden on doctors, fueling escalating expenses throughout the health care system. “Physicians know the practice of medicine carries risk, and even highly skilled doctors face lawsuits,” said AMA President Bobby Mukkamala, MD. “But a claim does not mean a mistake was made. Most cases never find fault with the physician, and the majority are dropped…

A bipartisan effort is underway in the Senate with the introduction of a bill to extended the federal terrorism risk insurance program for seven years. The change put construction projects on hold since financers required the insurance. This latest reauthorization bill extends the terrorism insurance program for seven years. Here is where the insurance fight begins. All Island’s commercial general liability policy with Peerless carries two additional insured endorsements, both tied to the same trigger – coverage applies for bodily injury “caused, in whole or in part, by” the named insured’s acts or omissions, or by those acting on its behalf, during ongoing operations. One of the endorsements also includes a primary and non-contributory provision when required by written contract. Travelers points to an August 7, 2013 subcontract that, it says, required All Island to name HSD and the owners as additional insureds on exactly that basis.
