Legislation that would have waived building permits for jobs valued at up to $7,500 failed to pass the Florida House this year, but the key clause found its way into another bill that is now awaiting the governor’s signature. “A local government that issues building permits shall exempt an owner of a single-family dwelling or the owner’s contractor from the requirement to obtain a building permit to perform any work valued at less than $7,500 on the owner’s property,” reads House Bill 803. The House approved the bill last week, a week after the state Senate passed it and just…
Across the market, insurers and MGAs have been gradually expanding coverage to address these gaps. Carriers such as Allianz, AXA XL and Tokio Marine HCC, as well as specialist MGA platforms, offer product recall solutions that can include contamination, government recall orders and certain non-injury triggers, depending on policy wording.
A combination of faster repair and payment cycle times, along with enhanced digital capabilities, has helped drive significant improvements in the overall customer experience with the property claims process in the United States. JD Power reported those findings while announcing results of its 2026 U.S. Property Claims Satisfaction Study. The annual survey found those improvements offset the negative effects of higher prices. A decline in large-scale weather events, a relatively calm hurricane season and a reduction in non-catastrophic claims volumes also brought some stability to the claims process, the global data analytics and consumer intelligence company said in a press…
A corrections officer at the Rikers Island jail complex pled guilty yesterday to receiving more than $370,000 in workers’ compensation benefits based on fake injury claims, according to federal prosecutors. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jay Clayton reported that Todd Faustin faked injuries after incidents where force was used against an inmate. He was arrested and charge last May. Officials said Faustin, of New York, pled guilty to one count of making false statements related to health care matters, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. For years, Faustin was employed by the…
Despite losses from natural disasters, the name behind HDI and Hannover Re exceeds expectations
In January, when President Donald Trump unveiled his one-page outline to address health care spending, dubbed “The Great Healthcare Plan,” he specifically mentioned the Affordable Care Act’s role in driving up costs. “I call it the unaffordable care act,” he said. He reprised the line in his 2026 State of the Union address, blaming “the crushing cost of health care” on Obamacare. Trump’s words also play off an ongoing congressional debate that began late last year with the expiration of the enhanced tax subsidies that had lowered the cost of ACA insurance for millions of Americans — and thrust the…

Greek shipowners and other companies are scanning their computer systems for evidence of cyberattacks after advice from the National Cybersecurity Authority, two sources said on Wednesday following incidents that have been linked to the Iran war. The authority last week sent an advisory, seen by Reuters, to security officers of shipping companies, banks and firms in the transport, telecommunications, health and energy sectors, a source at the authority said, adding that the move was pre-emptive. An Iranian-linked hacking group claimed responsibility on March 11 for a cyberattack on U.S.-based medical device and services provider Stryker, according to messages posted to…

Before the Atlantic hurricane season begins each year, forecasters release activity predictions that can have some influence on reinsurance pricing. However, a recent commentary from global alternative and active investment manager Man Group challenges the accuracy of these forecasts, questioning both their reliability and the benchmarks used to measure success.Recognising that catastrophe bond portfolio managers cannot predict the future, Man Group argues that rather than seeking opportunities based on seasonal forecasts, the industry should embrace unpredictability and focus on robust portfolio construction. In the firm’s latest commentary, written by Andre Rzym, Partner and Portfolio Manage at Man AHL, and Tarek…

Construction is finished on a major Massachusetts offshore wind farm, the first project to reach this stage during President Donald Trump’s time in office. Offshore construction was completed Friday night on Vineyard Wind with the installation of the final blades, Craig Gilvarg, a spokesperson for the project, said Saturday. Trump, who often talks about his hatred of wind power, has said his goal is to not let any “windmills” be built. Vineyard Wind was one of five major East Coast offshore wind projects the Trump administration halted construction on days before Christmas, citing national security concerns. Developers and states sued,…
US President Donald Trump is desperate to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to ease a growing global energy crisis. He won’t achieve that easily without a ceasefire in the war on Iran. Iran’s sporadic attacks on vessels and the threat of mines have cut traffic in the vital waterway to a trickle, effectively putting Tehran, not outside naval forces, in charge of the flow. The strait carries about a fifth of the world’s oil, and the disruption has led to production cuts, fuel shortages and price increases from Asia to Europe.
